Taking place from 10 to 12 October 2012 in Brussels, this year’s edition will focus on “Europe leading in value-based innovation – Smart regulation as a catalyst for growth”.
It is no secret that Europe is facing a rising demand for health services at a time when public spending is under pressure and fewer healthcare professionals are available. At the root of this problem is a demographic trend that will see an expanding elderly population – requiring and expecting a high level of care – while the number of taxpayers contributing to the national treasury is shrinking. By concentrating on value-based innovation, industry believes it can marry cost efficiency with improved health outcomes. However, the change needed in reforming European healthcare systems will require other healthcare stakeholders to play their part too. The status and outlook of collaboration between different healthcare actors in Europe will be the focus of the first day of the event.
On day two the programme will delve into the role and impact of EU regulation on the competiveness and innovativeness of European markets. The European Commission is currently working on its proposal for the Revision of the In Vitro Diagnostic and Medical Devices Directives, which will be published just before the MedTech Forum. The regulatory framework in Europe has allowed patients to access safe medical technology faster than anywhere in the world. Not only will the implications of the European Commission proposal in terms of patient access be addressed but also topics such as where companies will seek regulatory approval first, where venture capital will place its investments and what the outlook for Europe are on the agenda for day two.
The General Assemblies of both associations will be held on day three as well as two parallel sessions which will be organised by sponsors on topics in line with the general theme of this year’s event.
Even more interactivity
The venue, the professional moderator and high tech tools such as the smartphone app, gave rhythm to every session and allowed for real interactivity between the audience in 2011. This year, we are upping the ante with a new face-to-face meeting feature, directly integrated in the smartphone app.
