It is no secret that Europe is facing a rising demand for health services at a time when public spending is under pressure and fewer healthcare professionals are available. At the root of this problem is a demographic trend that will see an expanding elderly population – in need of, and expecting, a high level of care – while the number of taxpayers contributing to the national treasury is shrinking. By concentrating on value-based innovation, industry believes it can marry cost efficiency with improved health outcomes. However, the change needed in reforming European healthcare systems will require other healthcare stakeholders to play their part too. The status and outlook of collaboration between the different healthcare actors in Europe will be the focus of the first day of the event.
The European Commission is currently working on its proposal for the Revision of the In Vitro Diagnostic and Medical Devices Directives, which will be published just before the MedTech Forum. The regulatory framework in Europe has allowed patients to access safe medical technology faster than anywhere in the world. The implications of the European Commission proposal in terms of patient access, where companies will seek regulatory approval first, where venture capital will place its investments and what the outlook for Europe will be, are among the topics of discussion on day two.
