European Commission Exploratory Process ends – Eucomed applauds Commissioner Verheugen’s initiative

The European Commission’s DG Enterprise Exploratory Process on the Future of Medical Devices Sector saw the engagement and involvement of more than 20 healthcare stakeholders working together to map the existing public health and industrial challenges in the sector and investigate possible topics of reflection at the European level.

Brussels, 22 January 2010 – Eucomed is pleased to have actively collaborated with the European Commission during the Exploratory Process on the Future of the Medical Devices Sector. A report of the process, which began in October 2009 and finished today, has been agreed on, capturing the essence of the fruitful discussions and suggestions brought to the table by the various stakeholders.

The objective of the exploratory process on the future of the medical devices sector was to gather overview of existing public health and industrial challenges, to identify current dynamics of the industry and highlight key topics of interest at the European level which should result in a set of suggested themes of potential further reflection for the new Commission.

John Wilkinson, Chief Executive of Eucomed, states “Eucomed applauds the European Commission’s initiative to engage with industry, users of medical devices and consumers. Throughout the process, there has been a constructive and fruitful dialogue. We are pleased to see that many of our views and suggestions were taken into consideration and we also gained a better understanding of the views of others.”

Eucomed is looking forward to working with the two designated Commissioners and their teams in order to follow through on the outcomes of the Exploratory Process.
