Eucomed press release 06/08 - E-Health, an effective solution to today's big killers

Brussels, 6 June 2008 - The World Health Organization (WHO) recently published its "World health statistics 2008" report. The report reveals that non-communicable diseases with chronic conditions such as heart disease and stroke are now the chief causes of death globally.

Eucomed believes that medical devices and innovative medical technologies offer solutions which can help reduce this global burden and improve the life of patients suffering from such chronic diseases. Pacemakers and defibrillators for instance are medical devices which have a great impact on the management of heart conditions in patients. Recent European accomplishments in the development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) such as e-health provide healthcare professionals with the opportunity to change the way healthcare will be delivered.

"There is no doubt that medical technology has made a significant contribution to the treatment of the world's most prevalent diseases. What the WHO shows in its health statistics report points at an area where we believe innovative medical technologies could make an even greater contribution in the future. Medical device innovations in the area of e-health are one means for addressing today's and future health burdens such as chronic conditions", says John Wilkinson, Chief Executive of Eucomed.

About the report

World health statistics 2008 is based on data collected from WHO's 193 Member States.
