Brussels, 18 October 2007 - Guy Lebeau, M.D., Company Group Chairman, Johnson & Johnson, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), has been elected Chairman of the Board of Eucomed, the European medical technology industry association, with immediate effect through the end of 2008. The Eucomed delegates also elected Luciano Cattani, Group President, Stryker International to serve as Vice-Chairman, and Peter Steinmann, Vice President Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management, Medtronic International Trading Sarl as Treasurer.
The election of the 2007 Board of Directors took place during the association's annual general meeting and events in Geneva, Switzerland last week, which was attended by 150 medical technology industry leaders from Europe, as well as several senior executives from North America and Japan.
"The medical technology industry, with its 435,000 employees, is striving to find better solutions to address the growing medical needs of patients throughout our region," stated Dr. Lebeau. "The changing healthcare landscape in Europe is calling for further collaboration and engagement with all stakeholders, and Eucomed is intent on being an active driver of those partnerships today and in the future."
The newly elected Eucomed Board presented its short and long-term strategic imperatives at the general assembly, which included key areas such as shaping the development of tomorrow's healthcare systems, being an active partner with governmental bodies, and demonstrating the clinical benefit and value of medical technology.
Eucomed is the Voice of the medical technology industry in Europe. Eucomed represents directly and indirectly 4500 designers, manufacturers and suppliers of medical technology used in the diagnosis, prevention, treatment and amelioration of disease and disability, including ATMPs. Small and medium sized companies make up more than 80% of this sector. The European medical technology industry invests some €3,8 billion in R&D and employs near to 435.000 highly skilled workers.
