Brussels, 6 October 2006 - Eucomed, the European Medical Technology Industry Association, has today published "Innovations in Medical Technology - Nanotechnology", the first in a series of educational publications presenting some of the most exciting new and emerging medical technologies today.
One nanometre is the same as one billionth of a metre (or about one eighty thousandth the width of an average human hair). Nanotechnology - technology at nano-scale - is rapidly becoming ubiquitous, e.g. the use of carbon nanotubes in a variety of applications including medical technology, with a potential to impact on every aspect of modern human civilization. Nanotechnology will provide huge opportunities not only to improve materials and medical devices but also to create new "smart" devices and technologies. Several medical devices that have already benefited from the application of nanotechnology are in use or are currently being commercialised. Examples include:
Nanotechnology will bring about significant changes to the materials and products emerging in the medical technology area. Nanotechnology is a field in which Europe has great expertise and one in which the European industry can contribute to the achievement of the Lisbon agenda. Eucomed will also strive to ensure that the regulatory framework applied to medical technology products is appropriate and that it protects patient and public safety without jeopardizing innovation.
