Eucomed publishes human tissue engineering Vademecum

Brussels, 2 May 2006 - Eucomed, the European Medical Technology Industry Association, has today published a new Vademecum on human tissue engineering. This leaflet provides examples of human tissue products that are available to patients today, such as demineralized bone and substitute skin products, and what to expect in the near future.

Tissue engineering is the regeneration of biological tissue through the use of cells, with the aid of supporting structures and/or biomolecules. The development of human tissue engineering, and, in a wider sense, regenerative medicine, will change medical practice profoundly, offering better cost effective treatment, enhanced quality of life of patients and, in the future, a solution to overcome the shortage of donor organs for transplantation. The world-wide market for these products has been estimated at up to € 400 billion per year.
