
Pain free retina scanner receives European award for top invention
Douglas Anderson, Robert Henderson and Roger Lucas have been named “European Inventor of the Year” for developing a laser scanning technology which enables pain free but powerful scanning of the retina. The awards were presented by Slovenian President Danilo Türk, Commission Vice-President Günter Verheugen and the President of the European Patent Office (EPO), Alison Brimelow on 6 May 2008 at an award ceremony in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Their invention, dubbed the Optomap, allows doctors in a quarter of a second to scan the retina in a non-invasive manner and create digital images of over 80% of the retina.
